Ricepaper Cover

Hello my friends. It has been a long time since my last post. I was in China and had spent the whole summer doing un-art-related stuff.

The only achievement I got was this: my first magazine cover! Below are the thumbnails I created for the cover. The theme was about green and environment issues, so my ideas were around foliage, animals, blossoms, etc. Inspiration of the first one came from Na Zha (the Third Lotus Prince, if you know what I mean.)

Below is the final.  Thanks to the art director and the editor team, this project gave me enough freedom to work with. Really enjoyed the process.

Master copy - Sargent

So I did a master copy of Sargent's great paintings in Corel Painter. 4 hours.

Halfway - Sargent said about painting the eyes were like putting an egg into a cup. So I tried to do the eye socket first and then put the eyeball in. Very interesting.

Here is the final

New Illustration - Internal Conflict

This was a self-directed piece I did during the Christmas. It talks about the relationship between classes of a society.

Just want remember this

The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.

If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work.

All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.

Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and somthing else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive.

You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.

Tattoo Girl (Nudity)

This was a school project, and the task was to do a fashion illustration for a lingerie store. I did the lingerie at first, but then thought she looked much cooler without anything on her.

Free Our Journalists

A school project I did last year. They are posters to raise attention for media censorship in some communist countries.
